또 우리 대표단을 따뜻하게 환대해주신
존경하는 에르도안 대통령님 그리고 튀르키예 국민 여러분께
진심으로 감사하다는 말씀을 드립니다.
튀르키예의 한국전쟁 참전 75주년이자
저의 대통령 취임 첫해인 올해,
피를 나눈 ‘형제의 나라’ 튀르키예를 방문하게 돼서
매우 뜻깊게 생각합니다.
튀르키예는 대한민국과 수교를 맺기 전부터
각별한 관계였습니다.
이 같은 역사를 바탕으로
양국의 관계는 1957년 수교를 한 이래
빠른 속도로 발전해 왔습니다.
특히, 양국은 2012년 ‘전략적 동반자 관계’를 체결하고
정무, 경제, 문화, 인적 교류 등 모든 분야에서
호혜적인 협력을 심화해 나가고 있습니다.
또한, 유럽과 아시아의 길목에 위치한 튀르키예는
우수한 우리 기업들이 유럽 지역으로 진출하는 데 있어
든든한 거점이 되어주고 있습니다.
오늘 에르도안 대통령님과 저는
수교 이래 돈독한 발전을 이루어 온
우리 두 나라의 협력 현황을 점검하고,
양국의 전략적 동반자 관계를
더욱 미래지향적이고 호혜적인 관계로
확대, 발전시키는 방안에 대해서 심도 있게 논의하였습니다.
아울러, 지역과 국제 정세의 변화 속에
양국 간 연대를 심화해 나가기 위한 방안을
폭넓게 논의하였습니다.
우선, 양국이 방산 강국 도약을 위해 노력하는 과정에서
상호 신뢰를 바탕으로
공동생산, 기술협력, 훈련 교류 등에 있어
협력을 지속해 나가기로 약속했습니다.
이를 통해 ‘알타이 전차 사업’ 같은
성공적인 협력 사례를 더 많이 만들어
양국의 방위 산업 역량을 강화하고,
평화와 안보 증진에도 기여할 것을 기대합니다.
원자력 분야에서는 튀르키예의 신규 원전 사업 추진에 있어
앞으로 남은 세부 평가 과정이 순조롭게 이루어질 수 있도록
양국 정부 차원에서 관심을 갖고 지원해 나가기로 하였습니다.
한국의 우수한 원전 기술과 안전 운영 역량이
튀르키예의 원전 개발에 실질적으로 기여할 수 있기를 바랍니다.
바이오 분야에 있어
튀르키예 정부가 추진하는 ‘혈액제제 자급화 사업’에
한국 기업인 ‘SK플라즈마’가 참여하게 된 점을 매우 기쁘게 생각합니다.
특히 우리 양국이 ‘혈맹’ 관계인 점을 생각해 보면
이번 사업의 의미가 더 크게 다가오는 것 같습니다.
이 자리를 빌려 우리 기업의 참여에 관심을 가져주신
에르도안 대통령님께 각별히 감사하다는 말씀을 드립니다.
인프라 분야에서는
그간 ‘차낙칼레 대교’와 ‘유라시아 해저터널 건설’에 있어
양국 간 모범적인 인프라 협력을 평가하고,
이번 국빈 방문을 계기로 체결된 ‘도로사업 협력 MOU’를 통해
대한민국과 튀르키예의 인프라 분야 협력이 더욱 공고화될 수 있도록
양국 정부가 관심을 갖고 지원해 나가기로 하였습니다.
아울러, 신재생에너지, 인공지능, 디지털을 포함한
첨단과학기술 분야에서도
양국 간 전략적 협력을 심화해 나가기로 하였습니다.
이와 관련하여, 우리 기업인 ‘CS 윈드’와 튀르키예 ‘에네르지사’ 간의
풍력 발전 협력 MOU 체결을 환영합니다.
이를 계기로 신재생에너지 분야에서
양국의 민간 협력이 더욱 강화될 것으로 기대됩니다.
한편, 앞서 말씀드린
각 분야별 협력 방안의 진전 사항을
전반적으로 점검하고 이행하기 위해서
양국 간 경제공동위원회도 10년 만에 재개하기로 하였습니다.
참으로 늦었다는 생각이 들지만
늦었다고 생각할 때가 가장 빠르다라는 얘기도 있습니다.
그리고 에르도안 대통령님께서 강조하셨는데,
협력사업은 늦게 하면 안 하는 것과 비슷해지기 때문에
빨리 하는 게 중요하다, 속도가 생명이다라는 점에
전적으로 의견을 함께했습니다.
에르도안 대통령님과 저는
오늘 회담에서 한반도 문제와 중동 정세 등
다양한 글로벌 현안에 대해서도 폭넓은 의견을 교환하였습니다.
우리의 대북정책에 대한
에르도안 대통령님과 튀르키예 정부의
일관된 지지에 각별히 감사 말씀을 드립니다.
우리로서도 중동 정세에 있어 평화 증진을 위한
에르도안 대통령님과 튀르키예 정부의 노력에
높은 감사의 말씀과 동시에 평가한다는 말씀을 드립니다.
아울러, 이번 국빈 방문을 계기로
튀르키예 내 시리아 난민 문제 해결에 기여하고자
대한민국도 인도적 지원을 강화하기로 한 것을
의미 있게 생각합니다.
양국 관계의 가장 든든한 자산인
양국 국민 간의 유대를 심화하기 위해서
인적·문화적 교류도 더욱 활성화해 나가기로 하였습니다.
튀르키예에서 OTT를 중심으로
한국 문화와 한국어에 대한 관심이
빠르게 확산되고 있고,
한국에서도 튀르키예 음식, 문화, 예술에 대한 이해가
꾸준히 이어지고 있음을 매우 기쁘게 생각합니다.
튀르키예의 풍부한 관광자원과 대한민국의 문화적 매력으로
양국을 오가는 관광객도 꾸준히 증가하고 있습니다.
이에 더하여 양국의 문화원 활동과 한국의 유학생 사업 등을 통해서
미래세대 간 이해가 제고되고
교류가 더욱 활성화될 수 있기를 바랍니다.
또한, 양국은 보훈 협력도 지속적으로 강화해 가기로 하였습니다.
이번 국빈 방문을 계기로 조금 전에 보신 것처럼 체결된
양국 정부 간 보훈 협력 MOU를 통해
앞으로 참전용사 가족과 후손에 대한 지원이
더욱 공고화될 것으로 기대됩니다.
오늘 저는 에르도안 대통령님과의 회담을 통해서
양국 간의 우정과
이를 기반으로 하는 전략적 협력이 날로 강화되어
미래세대까지 든든하게 이어질 수 있을 것이라고
확신하게 됐습니다.
대한민국은 튀르키예의 ‘형제 국가’로서,
오늘 정상회담에서 논의된 사항들이
앞으로 착실히 그리고 특별히 신속하게 이행될 수 있도록
최선을 다하겠습니다.
이러한 차원에서 13년 만에 이루어진
한국 대통령의 튀르키예 국빈 방문을 계기로
양국의 포괄적 협력을 아우르는
「대한민국과 튀르키예 공화국 간
전략적 동반자 관계에 관한 공동성명」을
채택하고 발표하게 된 것을 매우 뜻깊게 생각합니다.
이번 공동성명이
오늘 정상회담에서 논의된 제반 사항을
원활히 추진하기 위한
좋은 지침서가 될 것으로 확신합니다.
존경하는 에르도안 대통령님,
그리고 튀르키예 국민 여러분의 건강과 행복,
그리고 형제 국가인 우리 양국의
변함없는 우정과 발전을 기대합니다.

Remarks by President Lee Jae Myung at the Korea–Türkiye Joint Press Conference

Merhaba.
First of all, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and the people of Türkiye for proposing this state visit and warmly welcoming my delegation.
I find it truly meaningful to be visiting our “brotherly nation” of Türkiye this year, which marks both the 75th anniversary of its participation in the Korean War and my first year in office.
Even before establishing diplomatic relations, Türkiye and the Republic of Korea had forged a special bond.
When the Korean War broke out, Türkiye – despite not yet having formal diplomatic ties with Korea – sent the fourth-largest contingent of troops, trailing only the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada. This is why our two countries are widely known among our peoples as brotherly nations.
Building upon this shared history, we have rapidly advanced our bilateral relations since establishing diplomatic ties in 1957. In particular, since forming a Strategic Partnership in 2012, our two countries have continued to deepen our mutually beneficial cooperation in a wide range of areas, including politics, the economy, culture and people-to-people exchanges.
In addition, Türkiye’s location at the crossroads of Europe and Asia has made it a reliable foothold for leading Korean businesses entering the European market.
Today, President Erdoğan and I reviewed the progress in our two nations’ cooperative efforts, which have grown steadily since the establishment of diplomatic ties. We also engaged in in-depth discussions on ways to further develop our strategic partnership and make it even more forward-looking and mutually beneficial.
Moreover, we had extensive discussions on how to strengthen our solidarity in response to the rapidly changing regional and international landscape.
First, we agreed to continue cooperation – based on mutual trust – on joint production, technological collaboration and personnel training exchanges, among others, as we work toward emerging as leading defense industry powers.
Through these efforts, we hope to create more success stories of cooperation, like the Altay Main Battle Tank production program, thereby enhancing the defense capabilities of both countries and contributing to peace and security. In the nuclear energy sector, both governments agreed to remain engaged and provide support in order to ensure that the remaining detailed evaluation processes for Türkiye’s new nuclear power plant project proceed as planned. I look forward to Korea’s outstanding nuclear technology and operational safety capabilities contributing substantially to the development of Türkiye’s nuclear energy.
In the biohealth sector, I am pleased that the Korean company SK Plasma is participating in Türkiye’s initiative to achieve self-sufficiency in blood products. Notably, this project is all the more significant given the blood-forged bond that unites our two countries. I would like to take this opportunity to once again express my gratitude to President Erdoğan for his interest in the participation of a Korean company.
In the infrastructure sector, we two leaders commended the exemplary infrastructure cooperation between our two countries, as seen in the Ç anakkale Bridge and the Eurasia Tunnel construction projects. Both governments agreed to follow developments closely and help further strengthen cooperation in infrastructure through the MOU on Road Project Cooperation, signed during this state visit.
Moreover, our two countries reached an agreement to deepen strategic cooperation in advanced technologies, including new and renewable energy, as well as in AI and digital technologies.
In this regard, I welcome the signing of the MOU on wind farm cooperation between Korea’s CS Wind and Türkiye’s Enerjisa. I hope this will serve as a catalyst for further strengthening private-sector cooperation between our two countries in new and renewable energy.
Our governments also agreed to reinitiate the Korea–Türkiye Joint Economic Committee after a 10-year hiatus to comprehensively review the substantive progress in cooperative measures across various sectors, as mentioned earlier, and implement these measures.
President Erdoğan and I also engaged in broad discussions on a wide range of global issues, including matters concerning the Korean Peninsula and developments in the Middle East.
I am grateful to President Erdoğan and the Turkish government for consistently supporting our government’s policy on North Korea.
Furthermore, we highly appreciate President Erdoğan’s efforts to promote peace in the Middle East. In addition, I found it very significant that, during my state visit, we agreed to bolster humanitarian assistance in order to help resolve issues regarding Syrian refugees in Türkiye.
We also agreed to further invigorate people-to-people and cultural exchanges in order to deepen the bonds between our peoples, which are the strongest asset of our bilateral relationship.
I am truly delighted that interest in Korean culture and language is quickly spreading, especially through streaming platforms, and that Korean people’s appreciation of Turkish food, culture and art continues to grow.
The number of travelers visiting our respective countries continues to rise thanks to Türkiye’s abundance of tourist attractions and the Republic of Korea’s cultural appeal. Furthermore, it is my hope that mutual understanding and exchanges between younger people from both countries will grow through activities at cultural centers in both countries and Korea’s international student programs.
Moreover, our two countries agreed to continue strengthening our cooperation in honoring and assisting war veterans. I believe that the MOU on cooperation in veterans’ affairs, signed between our two countries during my state visit, will further bolster support for veterans’ families and descendants.
Through today’s meeting with President Erdoğan, I have become confident that our two countries’ friendship and the strategic cooperation built on it will continue to grow stronger and endure for generations to come.
The Republic of Korea, a brother nation of Türkiye, will do everything it can to ensure that the issues discussed at today’s summit are faithfully implemented.
In this context, I find it truly meaningful to have adopted and to announce a Joint Statement on a Strategic Partnership between the Republic of Korea and the Republic of Türkiye on the occasion of the Korean President’s first state visit to Türkiye in 13 years.
I am confident that this joint statement will provide a good guidance for the smooth implementation of the matters discussed at today’s summit.
Once more, I wish the Turkish people good health and happiness and hope that our two countries’ friendship remains unwavering.
